Richard Dawkins Jumps The Shark

News out of Great Britain indicates that Richard Dawkins, perhaps the world’s most famous living atheist, is setting up a summer camp intended to help children and teenagers adopt atheism. As The Times [London] reports: “Give Richard Dawkins a child for a week’s summer camp and he will try to give you an atheist for life.”

As One With Authority

In 1971, just six years after being invited to teach New Testament and preaching at the Graduate Seminary of Phillips University, Fred Craddock put his thoughts on preaching into a book. That book, As One Without Authority, launched something of a revolution in preaching. Craddock proposed that preaching was on trial in the contemporary church, and that it was fast becoming an anachronism.

Is the Abortion Argument Changing?

Election cycles serve to confuse as well as to reveal.  Reading voting patterns is not quite like reading a CAT-scan, but something does appear to be happening among some parts of the electorate that had been solidly pro-life in voting patterns.

Recent Media — Issues, Etc.

I am so glad that Issues, Etc. is back on the air [listen here].  These Lutheran brothers put out one of the most consistently thoughtful shows on Christian radio.  Based in St. Louis, they cover the waterfront of contemporary theological issues.  I was glad to join them recently for a discussion about my new book, Atheism Remix.

New Attitude 2008

I was highly honored by the opportunity to speak to the New Attitude 2008 conference. It was so encouraging to see thousands of committed Christian young people at that event, and to be with Joshua Harris (the visionary who birthed New Attitude), C. J. Mahaney, Mark Dever, John Piper, and other speakers.

A Courageous Court Decision — Moral Clarity and Legal Restraint in New York

The decision against same-sex marriage handed down July 6 by the New York Court of Appeals (that state’s highest court) continues to send shock waves across the nation. The first wave of media coverage focused on the fact that the court found no basic constitutional right to same-sex marriage and declared that any change in the state’s marital law would have to come from the legislative branch.

Margaret Thatcher, one of the most significant leaders of the 20th century, died yesterday at age 87. A model of convictional leadership, Margaret Thatcher became almost universally known as Britain’s “Iron Lady.” In May 1979, Margaret Thatcher moved into No. 10 Downing Street and changed the course of British history. “And Them That Mourn” — Celebrating Christmas in the Face of Grief and Death

Families across the Christian world are gathering for Christmas even now, with caravans of cars and planeloads of passengers headed to hearth and home. Christmas comes once again, filled with the joy, expectation, and sentiment of the season. It is a time for children, who fill homes with energy, excitement, and sheer joy. And it is a time for the aged, who cherish Christmas memories drawn from decades of Christmas celebrations. Even in an age of mobility, families do their best to gather as extended clans, drawn by the call of Christmas.
