“They Did Not Honor Him as God, or Give Thanks”

Thanksgiving is a deeply theological act, rightly understood. As a matter of fact, thankfulness is a theology in microcosm — a key to understanding what we really believe about God, ourselves, and the world we experience.

A Secular Holiday: Thankful for…What?

What is it that an atheist has to be thankful for?  In the immediate, a person without Christ can be thankful for many things, assuming that the blessings of this life are only ‘good luck.’  But in the end, no one is ‘lucky’ enough to completely escape pain and death.  There are very permanent things…

Falling Flat: The Unethical Case for Monogamy

Is faithfulness in marriage a good thing, or has monogamy become overrated?  The Los Angles Times has recently reported on the state of monogamy in marriage, claiming that while monogamy is a viable option for couples, human beings are not naturally made for resolute faithfulness in relationships.  The New York Times simultaneously reports that many…

Why I Signed The Manhattan Declaration

I am not inclined to sign manifestos or petitions. While believing strongly and passionately about many causes, I am not usually impressed with the effectiveness of such statements and I am generally concerned about how such statements might be used or construed by others. I am not reluctant to speak for myself and from my own Christian convictions and consequent judgments. Furthermore, the constant exchange of opposing statements on this or that issue merely crowds the public square as opposing viewpoints compete for attention. So, for reasons perhaps both admirable and not so admirable, I prefer to stand on my own public statements.

Will Marriage Be Preserved For The Next Generation?

Marriage is under attack and many wonder if it will be preserved and defended for future generations.  From rewriting definitions to legislative battles, lines are being drawn that will shape the nature of the marriage debate for years to come.  In response to the growing tide of liberal definitions, the Manhattan Declaration seeks to send…

The Blur of Gender — Is The New York Times Trying to Tell Us Something?

Is The New York Times trying to tell us something? Just eleven days after running a story on gender-bending teenagers on the front page of its “Style” section, the paper is back with yet another front page story in the same section, this time on gender-bending young adults. The articles even cite the same psychologist as authority. What’s going on here?

When Morality Collapses — The Therapeutic Evasion

Every civilization relies on a consistent moral framework to provide stability and justice within society.  For some time now, the moral fabric which undergirds our society has been under attack by the secular elite.  Rather than seeing immoral acts as wrong and calling them that with intentional clarity, the psychiatric class has attempted to take…

When Morality Collapses — The Therapeutic Evasion

Any civilization requires a stable, rational, and consensual moral framework in order to survive. Western civilization has been built on a framework of Christian morality, with the so-called “Judeo-Christian ethic” providing the moral principles that support laws, ethical reasoning, and moral impulses.

“Abortion is as American as Apple Pie” — The Culture of Death Finds a Voice

Abortion is now one of America’s most common surgical procedures performed on adults. As many as one out of three women will have at least one abortion. In some American neighborhoods, the number of abortions far exceeds the number of live births.

Learning from Christopher Hitchens: Lessons Evangelicals Must Not Miss

The death of Christopher Hitchens on December 15 was not unexpected, and that seemed only to add to the tragedy.  His fight against cancer had been lived, like almost every other aspect of his colorful life, in full public view. He had told numerous interviewers that he wanted to die in an active, not a passive sense. Then again, there may never have been a truly passive moment in Christopher Hitchens’ life.

President Obama and Same-Sex Marriage — The Dance Continues

Some predictions are rather safe to make. 2012 is almost certain to be a determinative year on the issue of same-sex marriage. Multiple courts appear poised to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act [DOMA] and, even more urgently, the appeal on California’s Proposition 8 at the Ninth Circuit U. S. Court of Appeals will set up a certain appeal to the U. S. Supreme Court. Given the facts of this case and the significance of the nation’s most populous state, the Supreme Court is almost certain to take the case. This sets the stage for the courts to make some determinative statement on same-sex marriage within the next several months — a decision that will go a long way toward setting the direction of the larger culture.
