The stories pouring out of New Orleans and the other devastated areas of the Gulf coast carrry an incredible emotional punch — and rightly so. Among these stories, the account of a little 6-year-old boy shepherding five toddlers and holding an infant.
Here’s how The Los Angeles Times reported the story: In the chaos that was Causeway Boulevard, this group of refugees stood out: a 6-year-old boy walking down the road, holding a 5-month-old, surrounded by five toddlers who followed him around as if he were their leader. They were holding hands. Three of the children were about 2 years old, and one was wearing only diapers. A 3-year-old girl, who wore colorful barrettes on the ends of her braids, had her 14-month-old brother in tow. The 6-year-old spoke for all of them, and he told rescuers his name was Deamonte Love.
This story ends happily. The children were reunited with their mothers, who had been evaculate to San Antonio. Don’t miss reading the story — and be reminded that there are hundreds — possibly thousands — of children displaced or missing.
What human heart would not break under such a burden?
Thus says the Lord: “A voice is heard in Ramah, lamentation and bitter weeping. Rachel is weeping for her children; she refuses to be comforted for her children, because they are no more.” [Jeremiah 31:15, English Standard Version]
